Description
Starboard side view of the 45647 ton transport, HMT Aquitania departing in convoy US3 from Australia with troops third contingent of 2nd AIF bound for North Africa. The Cunard liner saw service as both a transport and hospital ship during the First World War and was again requisitioned at the outbreak of the Second World War. She took part in eight of the US series of convoys, transporting troops to Singapore and Port Moresby and returning troops from the Middle East. In November 1941 the liner picked up survivors from the German raider Kormoran after her action with HMAS Sydney off the Western Australian coast.
