Portrait of the Platoon Commander and Non Commissioned Officers of 9 Platoon, C Company, 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR) at the forward Company base at Bokah, Sarawak. Back row from left, 15786 Corporal (Cpl) (later Major) Edwin William Lang; 29833 Sergeant (Sgt) Michael Weir Barrett; Lieutenant (Lt) (Later Brigadier) Rodney Gerald Curtis, Officer Commanding 9 Platoon; 215129 Cpl David Llewellyn Groundwater; 36423 Cpl Brian James Morris; Front row from left, 43214 Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Brian Walter (Max) Hunter; 37593 L/Cpl Rodney Lowther Lees; and 5411229 L/Cpl Douglas Walter Farmer. Cpl Lang was wounded in action whilst serving in Sarawak in 1966 and later served in South Vietnam with the 2nd Advanced Ordinance Depot (2AOD) from 1969-1971. Sgt Barrett served as a Private with 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR), during the Malayan Emergency from 1959-1960 and later in South Vietnam with the 1st Australian Reinforcement Unit (1ARU) in 1968 and again with 1RAR from 1968-1969. Lt Curtis, was awarded the Military Cross on 16 May 1967 and he also served in South Vietnam with 9th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (9RAR) from 1968-1969. Cpl Groundwater later served in South Vietnam with the 5th Company, Royal Australian Army Service Corps (RAASC) from 1971-1972. Cpl Morris later served with 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) and 1RAR during the Malayan Emergency from 1958-1960. He later served in South Vietnam with 4RAR from 1968-1969. L/Cpl Hunter previously served with 3RAR in Borneo in 1965 and later in South Vietnam with 3RAR from 1967-1968. L/Cpl Lees later served in South Vietnam with 5th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (5RAR) in 1969 where he was wounded in action. L/Cpl Farmer later served in South Vietnam with 9RAR from 1968-1970. Cpl (later Major) Lang was wounded in action in 1966 and later served in South Vietnam with the 2nd Advanced Ordinance Depot (2AOD) from 1969-1971 and with Headquarters Australian Forces Vietnam (HQ AFV) also in 1971. Sgt Barrett, served as a Private with 1RAR during the Malayan Emergency from 1959-1960 and later in South Vietnam with the 1st Australian Reinforcement Unit (1ARU) in 1968 and with 1RAR again from 1968-1969. The men in the front row are all armed with L1A1 Self Loading Rifles (SLR).
