Description

Group portrait of men from 9 Platoon (9 Pl), C Company (C Coy), 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR), on Operation Claret. Identified from left are British Lieutenant (Lieut), Brian William Cloughley, a Forward Observation Officer (FOO) from Five Battery Royal Artillery, on loan to C Coy, 4RAR; 57068 Lieutenant (Lt) (Later Brigadier) Rodney Gerald Curtis (hand on head), Officer Commanding 9 Pl; 18276 Signaller, Private (Pte) John Frederick Young (bare chested); and 36423 Corporal (Cpl) Brian James Morris (wearing hat). Capt Cloughley later joined the Australian Army and served in South Vietnam as 311622, firstly with Head Quarters 1 Australian Task Force (1ATF), secondly with The 1 Psychological Operations Unit (1 Psych Ops Unit) and finally with Headquarters 1 Australian Logistics Support Group (HQ 1 ALSG) during 1971. Lt Curtis was later awarded the Military Cross on 16 May 1967 for his actions during a Claret operation in an ambush against members of the Indonesian Army Para Commando Regiment, RPKAD (Resimen Para Komando Angkatan Darat), on 15 June 1966. He also served in South Vietnam with 9th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (9RAR) from 1968-1969. Pte Young also served in South Vietnam with 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR) in 1967 where he was wounded in action. Cpl Morris served with 3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) and later with 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) during the Malayan Emergency from 1957-1960, and he later served in South Vietnam with 4RAR from 1968-1969.
