Description

Group portrait of unidentified Republican soldiers in Spain during the civil war. The men have recuperated from their wounds or sickness and are awaiting embarkation to Britain. Australian, Charles Walters (visible lower left, wearing peaked cap), served in the 15th International Brigade on the Ebro and Aragon Fronts. During the evacuation at Tereul he was injured and spent five months recovering. He eventually returned to Australia, where he became the Assistant Secretary of the Spanish Relief Committee in Adelaide.
