Roulston, Alexander Sommerville
Collection of 2 original letters written in 1943 and 1944 by portrait artist, Norman St Clair Carter, to the family of 421127 Flying Officer (FO) Alexander Sommerville Roulston, 587 Squadron RAF, Royal Australian Air Force. In 1943, Carter painted a portrait of FO Roulston in uniform, which is now in the Australian War Memorial Art Collection (ART92816). He wrote a letter to the Roulston family after the portrait was completed, commenting on his enjoyment of both painting the portrait and of his assocation with FO Roulston. On 11 May 1944, FO Roulston was killed in a flying accident in south-west England whilst flying solo in an Army co-operation exercise. The second letter from Carter was written after FO Roulston's death, conveying his sympathy to the Roulston family.
