Studio portrait of Captain (Capt) Francis Ormond Purnell 46th Battalion. A costing clerk from Geelong, Vic prior to enlistment, Capt Purnell originally enlisted as a Private, service number 975, in the 23rd Battalion. After promotion to Corporal he attended the 6th Officers Course of Instruction and graduated with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and embarked with the 12th Reinforcements, 14th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Ceramic on 23 November 1915. Later transferring to the 46th Battalion he was promoted to Captain and was killed in action on 13 November 1916. He was initially buried where he fell, but following the Armistice his remains were exhumed and re-buried in the Bancourt British Cemetery, France.
