Full-page diary entry; verso: Oil refineries on the ocean
22nd page in a sketchbook of 42 pages of pencil drawings, diary entries and artist's notes. Full-page diary entry which reads: '...shown inside. The rooms were filthy, squalid, rooms [sic] with bits of rubbish everywhere, a heavy airless, musty odor pervaded the rooms. Everything appeared to be left as it was, piles of diirty daundry, dirty cups etc. The squalid nature of the living conditions came as a shock to me. In one room was a photograph of 3 small children of ages 4-12, posed together as a group portrait. Their Daddy was down below. I wondered what we were dong on their ship.' (Peter Churcher, 12 February 2002). The first half of the text begins on the preceding page of the sketchbook. Verso: Oil refineries on the horizon of the Persian Gulf; the image moves onto the opposite page of the sketchbook.
