Studio portrait of 24204 Engine Room Artificer 4th Class Douglas William Charles Smith, RAN. Enlisting on 28 March 1940, he served aboard the HMAS Sydney II. He was killed in action, aged 24, on 20 November 1941 when HMAS Sydney sunk off the Western Australian coast while battling with the German auxiliary cruiser, HSK Kormoran, which also sank. The inscription on the image reads "To Maurice luck always from Doug".
