Description
The remains of 94 Wing Commander (later Group Captain) Brian Reginald 'Blackjack' Walker's Beaufighter (A19-38 U), of 30 Squadron RAAF. Suffering an engine failure, Walker was forced to crash land in the shallows off Pyramid Point, Port Moresby. The event became known as ' Walker's Crack up'. The aircraft was later salvaged and was used for spare parts (approved for conversion to components). Beaufighter aircraft from No 30 Squadron, RAAF, played a significant role in destroying a Japanese convoy and escort ships in what became known as the battle of the Bismarck sea which was fought from 2 - 4 March 1943. Note the rubber dingy (left) and the motor launch (background).
