Description
A calico drawstring bag used to return Sergeant Coyne's personal effects back to his family in Australia. A textile label is sewn to the side of the bag, marked in indelible pencil with the following: '3347 Sergt Coyne DE RC 31st Battalion AIF Died 9.10am 15/5/17'. The '17' has been crossed out and '18 substituted.
History / Summary
SGT DAVID EMMETT COYNE OF 31 BATTALION, AIF WAS KILLED BY A GRENADE ON 15 MAY 1918 AND WAS AWARDED A POSTHUMOUS GOLD ALBERT MEDAL FOR HIS ACTION IN SAVING LIVES AT THE COST OF HIS OWN.
