Improvised POW smoking pipe: Lance Corporal Victor Stuart McComb, 22nd Infantry Brigade
Description
Smoking pipe, a variation on the apple shape, apparently turned from the leg of a teak billiard table. The neck is straight and the joint between bowl and shank is covered by an aluminium band. The bowl has been used and there are traces of burnt tobacco inside.
History / Summary
Pipe made at Changi and in the possession of Victor Stuart McComb when he returned home. McComb, born on 6 July 1904 and a resident of Frankston, Victoria, enlisted on 20 June 1940, aged 36. He was assigned service number VX23243. Initially posted to 8th Division Petrol Company, he was imprisoned when Singapore fell to the Japanese and was released in early August 1945. He was discharged on 19 November 1945, described as being a member of 22nd Infantry Brigade.
