Studio portrait of VX61482 Private (Pte) Rowland Robert Dando, 2/10th Ordnance Field Park, of Essendon, Victoria. A storeman prior to enlistment on 13 August 1941, Pte Dando died of amoebic dysentery on 4 September 1943, whilst a prisoner of war (POW) in Burma (Myanmar). His brother, VX61577 John Edward (Jack) Dando, also enlisted in the AIF on 24 September 1941 and served with the same unit as his brother. He also was a POW and worked on the Burma-Thailand Railway, where his left leg was amputated below the knee. Jack returned to Australia at the end of 1945.
