Description
Studio portrait of 3034 Private (Pte) William Mafeking Gannaway, 6th Reinforcements, 3rd Pioneer Battalion, of Perth, WA. He was a member of the 84th Infantry, Citizens Military Forces, for four years prior to enlisting with the AIF on 25 October 1916, and worked as a miller's assistant. At the time of enlistment he was 16 years of age, but stated that he was 18 and half years of age. He embarked from Fremantle on 29 December 1916 aboard HMAT Persic and travelled to England and then on to France. Pte Gannaway was killed in action on 24 May 1917, during the Battle of Messines, aged just 17 years and six days. His middle name was probably chosen to commemorate the relief of Mafeking in South Africa in May 1900.
