Pte Walster, enlisted on 31 July 1915 at Warwick Farm, NSW, and embarked aboard HMAT Port Lincoln from Sydney, NSW, on 13 October 1915 and returned to Australia on 15 April 1919. He again enlisted on 18 October 1915 in Melbourne and embarked aboard HMAT Port Lincoln from Melbourne, Vic, on 18 October 1915, joining his friend Bill Walster. Gnr McQuade was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for his actions on 27 July 1917 going to the assistance of his sergeant to extinguish a fire in a ammunitions dump close to their position with 11th Howitzer Battery, 14th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB). “His initiative and coolness was a magnificent example to all ranks”. He was invalided to Australia on 21 December 1917 after receiving gunshot wounds to his chest and left arm.
