Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX45201 Lieutenant Douglas McDonald McQueen, 2/29 Australian Infantry Battalion, Second Australian Imperial Force, Singapore, 1942-1945.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of two notebooks of Lieutenant Douglas McDonald McQueen. These notebooks were used by Lieutenant McQueen during his time as a prisoner of war of the Japanese, between 1942 and 1945. In his first notebook, Lieutenant McQueen records the names, fates and details of next of kin of many men in 2/29 Australian Infantry Battalion. Lieutenant McQueen’s second notebook contains drafts of letters to his friends and family. It also contains a nominal roll of members of 245 Platoon, Headquarters Company, 2/19 Australian Infantry Battalion, a list of clothing sizes, and repatriation information.

History / Summary

Lieutenant Douglas McDonald McQueen enlisted to the Second Australian Imperial Force on 8 July 1940, after previously serving with the Citizen Military Force. Lieutenant McQueen served with 2/29 Australian Infantry Battalion in Malaya. In February 1942, he was captured as a prisoner of war of the Japanese. Lieutenant McQueen worked on the Thai-Burma Railway as part of “F” Force. After the war, Lieutenant McQueen returned to Australia and was discharged on 7 January 1946.
