Peace
Description
Peace depicts a full-lenth portrait of a man standing in front of a green coloured curtain. The man is dressed in a white clown's or harlequin's clothes with a large blue collar and pom-poms down the front. The depicted man's stance is relaxed and possibly fatigued, and he looks out to the viewer with a pensive but humoured look. It is the title of the work, Peace, along with the date written in the top right corner, which is November 8th 1918, that gives significance to the depicted subject. On the 8 November there was a premature announcement of the end of the First World War that resulted in vast celebrations - it was not until the 11 November that Germany actually applied for armistice.
