Studio portrait of 2845 Private (Pte) John Joseph McCormack, 38th Battalion, a labourer of Brookside, Vic. Pte McCormack enlisted on 6 October 1916 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Medic on 16 December 1916. Whilst fighting in France he was seriously wounded and after hospital treatment in England he returned to Australia on 15 April 1918. He was discharged as medically unfit for duty on 27 July 1918. He committed suicide during the Second World War. His older brother 3447 Pte Ernest Albert McCormack, 55th Battalion, died of wounds received in action in Belgium on 20 October 1917.
