Studio portrait of 59728 Private William Dirksen (William Nicolas Dirksen), 55th Battalion. A fireman of North Ryde NSW (originally of Amsterdam, Holland), he enlisted on 4 June 1918 and sailed with the 14th Reinforcements aboard SS Gaika on 30 July 1918. He died of disease, aged 28, on 12 February 1919, eleven days after being admitted to No40 Stationary Hospital, Harfleur, France with bronchial pneumonia and is buried at Ste Marie Cemetery Le Havre, France.
