Night boarding operation, HMAS Armidale
Night scene of a boarding operation conducted by patrol boat HMAS Armidale during Operation Cranberry, a joint ADF and Coastwatch co-ordinated civil maritime surveillance program in northern Australia. Seen from the port side of the Armidale, several members of her crew are approaching a suspected illegal fishing vessel aboard a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB). A customs vessel is visible in the distance at left. HMAS Armidale was the fist of 12 new Armidale Class Patrol Boats supplied to the Royal Australian Navy from May 2005. Based in the ports of Darwin and Cairns, the Armidale Class fleet operate within Australia's Marine Jurisdictional Zones, primarily carrying out surveillance, interception, investigation, apprehension and the escort to port of vessels suspected of illegal fishing, quarantine, customs or immigration offences.
