An Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) Fire Support Base (FSB) under construction near Route 2 by members and vehicles of 17 Construction Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE). A Caterpillar bulldozer can be seen (left foreground) and a Caterpillar, Cat 966 B articulated loader towing a vibrating roller as it compacts the earth around a newly constructed sandbagged fortification (centre). A similar vehicle is operating (right background). Other fortifications are also being constructed around the FSB. The Australian vehicles were left overnight at this base for a few weeks, as they were too far from their main depot at Nui Dat to return at the end of each day. A Night Defence base called Garth was later built and was used to house the vehicles and men overnight instead. Note the three Vietnamese children in the centre leaning against the sandbags.
