Description
Studio portrait of 4729 Corporal (Cpl) Charles Prowse Allen, 59th Battalion, of St Arnaud, Vic. He enlisted on 27 September 1915, and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Wiltshire on 7 March 1916 with the 15th Reinforcements to the 6th Battalion. While training at Tel-el-Kebir, Egypt, he was transferred to the 59th Battalion and went to France on 18 June 1916. He was wounded on 19 July 1916 and died from those wounds on 23 July 1916. Prior to enlisting he was a teacher and his official reports refer to him as 'a very good teacher and organizer, and commend his bright and encouraging manner'.
