Studio portrait of 2325 Private Raymond Aubrey Gardiner, 38th Battalion of Coburg, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Port Lincoln (A17) on 20 October 1916. On 4 October 1917, aged 26, during fighting along Passchendaele Ridge, Belgium, he was killed in action when struck by an artillery shell. He has no known grave, and is remembered with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium..
