Description

Studio portrait of 379 Private Alexander Ballantyne Hodder, 15th (later 24th) Machine Gun Company of South Yarra, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Commonwealth (A73) on 19 September 1916. On 19 October 1917, he was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium, , aged 24. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
