Description
Studio portrait of 5076 Gunner (later Private) William Stanley Opie, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade (later 24th Battalion) of Kew, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ballarat (A70) on 9 September 1915. On 4 October 1917, he was killed in action near Broodseinde Ridge, Belgium, aged 20, together with 57 other members of his Battalion. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
