Studio portrait of 506 Private (Pte) (later Sergeant (Sgt)) Leonard Say, 3rd Battalion (later 1st Company Australian Machine Gun Corps) of Corryong, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Euripides (A14) on 20 October 1914. On 7 November 1917, he was killed in action during fighting at Passchendaele, Belgium, aged 26. Sgt Say is remembered with honour on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Sgt Say was awarded a Millitary Medal for his leadership and courage during an action on 4 October 1917, west of Ypres, Belgium. Sgt Say’s brother 394 Pte Douglas Stanley Say (also known as Saye) was wounded at Gallipoli and died of his wounds in Egypt at The Bombay Presidency Hospital on 25 May 1915.
