Description
Studio portrait of 2897 Private (later Sergeant (Sgt)) John Francis Walsh, 38th Battalion of Hawthorn, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Medic (A7) on 16 December 1916. On 31 August 1918, during his Battalion's advance along the Somme valley, he was wounded in action and died the same day at the 41st Casualty Clearing Station, France, aged 28. Sgt Walsh is buried in the Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, France. His younger brother, 1244 Private Thomas Walsh was killed in action on 18 August 1916.
