Description
Studio portrait of 4621 Private (Pte) Edgar Williams, 5th (later 58th) Battalion of Castlemaine, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 28 January 1916. On 19 July 1916, he was killed in action during the Battle of Fromelles, France, aged 32. Pte William has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles. As a result of his bravery during the battle, when he "brought in 3 wounded men and 6 unwounded men", Pte Williams was posthumously recommended for and awarded the Military Medal.
