Fund raising medalet
Description
Gilded bronze medalet featuring on the obverse a bust Queen Victoria with words around the edge 'BRITISH TRANVAAL WAR 1899 1900'. On the reverse are two flags, the Union Jack and a pre Federation example of the Australian National Flag, in the arc betwee the flags is written '1899' above and '1900' below. The words written around the edge are 'GOOD LUCK ATTEND AUSTRALIAN CONTINGENTS'. A small ring runs through a hole at the top of the medalet, fed through this wring is a red white and blue ribbon.
History / Summary
Produced at the start of the Boer War, medalets like these were sold to raise funds for the Australian contingents. This particular medalet was produced in silver or gilded bronze.
