Description
Fragment of a shell fired from a British 4.7 inch gun.
History / Summary
Collected from Railway Hill after the battle of Tugela Heights 14-27 February 1900. During the battle two 4.7 inch naval guns, on improvised 'Percy Scott' carriages, were on Clump Hill, the underfeature of Monte Cristo. On the morning of 21 February these two guns opened fire on Railway Hill after Boer artillery was witnessed in the area. Railway hill was later taken by the British 5th Brigade on 27 February.
