Informal portrait of 559 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Ron Widmer DFC with Morcombe children Michael and Alma. The Morcombe family had come to Sale after their father 406572 Flt Lt Frank Keith Morcombe had been transferred to No 1 Operational Training Unit (1OTU) to train other pilots. Originally serving with No 2 Squadron RAAF, Morcombe was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in August 1943 for actions whilst a member of No 2 Squadron RAAF. He was transferred to 1 OTU as a flying instructor and was killed in a flying accident on 5 October 1943 at Sale, Vic.
