Description

Portrait of VX43981 Private (Pte) David Pimpernell Hotchin, 4th Reserve Motor Transport Company, Australian Army Service Corps, of Hawthorn, Vic. On the front of the portrait it has the words "Mates of hut 14 dated 04-08-1941", and is signed with approximately 30 names and service numbers. Pte Hotchin enlisted on 3 July 1940. He was one of over 2000 Allied prisoners of war (POW) held in the Sandakan POW camp in north Borneo, having been transferred there from Singapore as a part of B Force. The 1494 POW's that made up B Force, were transported from Changi on 7 July 1942 on board the tramp ship Ubi Maru, arriving in Sandakan Harbour on 18 July 1942. Private Hotchin, aged 53, died as a prisoner of the Japanese in Borneo on 7 March 1945. He was the son of David and Jessie Hotchin, and the husband of Margaret Ellen Hotchin, of Auburn, Vic. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Labuan Memorial Panel 23.
