Description
Port side view of the United States New Orleans class heavy cruiser, USS Quincy (CA-39), taken after shooting down the first Japanese high level bomber aircraft, its smoke seen on the horizon, during the Battle of Savo Island. On 9 August 1942, while on patrol in convoy between Florida Island and Savo Island, USS Quincey was attacked by a large Japanese naval force and sustained numerous direct hits. With all guns out of action she sank approximately four kilometers east of Savo Island in what later became known as Ironbottom Sound, 370 of her crew, including the captain were lost with her.
