Studio portrait of 84 Private (Pte) Hugh MacDermitt Brindley, 37th Battalion. A farmer of Balldale, NSW, he enlisted on 21 February 1916 with his brother, 85 Pte Thomas Brindley, and sailed aboard HMAT Persic from Melbourne on 3 June 1916. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant before he was killed in action, aged 28, on 12 October 1917 at Passchendaele. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
