Studio portrait of five officers. Identified, in the back row are: Lieutenant (Lt) Austin Albert Heritage, 15th Reinforcements, 12th Battalion, of Launceston, Tas. A bank clerk prior to enlisting on 27 May 1915, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ballarat on 18 February 1916. Lt Heritage was awarded the Military Cross on 3 April 1917 and returned to Australia on 3 July 1917; Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Malcolm Crawford, 12th Battalion. Crawford enlisted on 14 June 1916 and was assigned regimental number 6263. An engineer prior to enlistment, he embarked from Melbourne as a private with the 20th Reinforcements, 12th Battalion. He previously served with the 91st Infantry, Citizens Military Forces. 2nd Lt Crawford returned to Australia on 16 July 1917. Front row: Captain Eric Ernest Von Bibra, 57th Battalion, who returned to Australia on 3 July 1917. Von Bibra was mayor of Launceston.
