Collection relating to the service of Henry Joseph Erb RAAF
The port side forward fuselage section showing the nose art of JA315 Avro Lancaster 'P' Peter, of 460 Squadron, RAAF. The art depicts a cartoon caricature sitting in a canoe holding a boomerang, with a full moon rising in the background. The canoe has been decorated with eyes and teeth. The Lancaster has been given the name 'The Fooship' and painted next to the caricature is the aircraft's bomb log showing 25 completed missions represented by three rows of small kangaroos and a single boomerang. A larger kangaroo and a Distinguished Flying Cross ribbon are also visible. On returning from it's 34th or 35th operation, the substitute crew (not the usual crew) forgot to lower the under carriage which resulted in a surprise belly landing. 'P' Peter was damaged beyond repair and written off.
