History / Summary

This patriotic crochet tray cloth is associated with the service of the Glanville Family from Nowra, NSW. Three brothers served during the First World War: 39 Trooper Charles Henry Glanville, 5102 Private Septimus Douglas Glanville and 6691 Sapper Cedric Richard Glanville.

Due to the subject matter of the cloth, it is possible it relates more to the service of Charles Glanville, as he served with the 5th Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli from July 1915 until the evacuation, excluding a brief period when he was evacuated sick in October. He later served in Sinai and Palestine. He was awarded the Military Medal, which was gazetted in March 1918.

Septimus Glanville served with the 49th Battalion on the Western Front. He was wounded in September 1916 at Mouquet Farm. On 7 June 1917 he went missing and was presumed killed during the attack on the Messines-Wytschaete Ridge. His body was later recovered and he was buried in the field. However, his grave was lost in subsequent fighting and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium.

Cedric Glanville served with the Field Company Engineers on the Western Front. In September 1917 he was wounded. He returned to Australia and was discharged in 1919. He later served in the Second World War with the CMF with the service number N100853 and later in the Second AIF with the service number NX109261. He was discharged in 1944 and died in 1946.
