Silver cavalry trumpet presentation plaque : 13/18 Royal Hussars, Tobruk War Memorial
Rectangular sterling silver plaque with a pair of suspension chains attached. The reverse is impressed with hallmarks denoting manufacture in London in 1948, but the maker's stamp is unclear. The obverse is engraved 'SJT. STRONG, 13/18TH ROYAL HUSSARS (QMO) SOUNDED LAST POST AND REVEILLE UPON THIS TRUMPET AT THE UNVEILING OF THE AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL AT TOBRUK, 30TH APRIL, 1948. PRESENTED BY THE REGIMENT TO THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL EXECUTIVE'.
This plaque was attached to the cavalry trumpet (RELAWM30892.001) which was one of a set of six silver trumpets belonging to the 13/18 Hussars, which were formed by an amalgamation of the 13th and 18th Royal Hussars in 1922. The original engraving on the bell relates to the initial presentation of this bugle by Mrs Moller in memory of her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Moller, who had seen service in the Boer War and First World War. This trumpet was then used to sound the Last Post and Reville at the opening of the Australian War Memorial at Tobruk in 1948. Arrangements were made by the Australian War Memorial board for a replacement presentation trumpet to be forwarded to 13/18 hussars in exchange for this example. The plaque commemmorates the the latter event and its presentation to the War Memorial.
