Crochet milk jug cover : Mrs G L Ewan
White cotton filet crochet patriotic milk jug cover in the shape of an eight-pointed star. Each point is weighted with a blue, a red and a clear glass bead. The cloth features the text 'DARDANELLES 1915 OUR HEROES' and abattleship with two Union Jacks.
This patriotic milk jug cover was hand crocheted by a member of the Cheltenham Womens' Bowling Club in Eastwood, New South Wales in 1915 to commemorate Australia's involvement in the Dardanelles campaign.
Crocheted milk covers, which served the practical purpose of keeping flies away from the milk as well as a decorative purpose, were popular during this period. Patterns were published in women's magazines and newspaper supplements. Australian women could use them to make a variety of household items, such as bedspreads, tray cloths or table cloths.
