Description
Silver medallion for departure of NSW troops to the Sudan, 1885. Obverse: The bust of General Gordon, wearing a fez, facing right, with the words 'GENERAL GORDON CB' around the circumference. Reverse: In the centre 'THE N.S.W. TROOPS TO SOUDAN' surrounded by 'TO COMMEMORATE THE DEPARTURE OF . MAR - 3 - 85' all within an octagonal frame. A small hole is drilled at 12 o'clock for a ring suspender.
History / Summary
This medallion is one of a batch commissioned and sold by a Patriotic Fund as a source of income to provide comforts for the troops of the New South Wales Contingent as they left for overseas service in 1885.
