Silver Presentation Cup : Colour Sergeant J Gibson, 12th Regiment of Foot
Sterling silver presentation cup bearing London hallmarks for 1858 and the maker's initials 'SH/DC' within a square. The base is impressed '8422'. The inside of the cup is finished in silver gilt. The cup is embossed and engraved with flowers, acanthus leaves and scrolls, and an Australian hunting scene showing a man and dog hunting kangaroos. One side of the cup is engraved 'Presented BY THE Sergeant Major & Sergeants of the First Battalion XII Regiment To Colour Sergeant JOSEPH GIBSON as a mark of respect on his leaving the Regiment SYDNEY, JAN 1861.'
1157 Sergeant Joseph Gibson was stationed with part of the 12th Regiment of Foot at Ballarat, Victoria, in December 1854 and would have taken part in the suppression of the uprising at Eureka Stockade. Regimental records suggest that he was the most senior non-commissioned officer in his unit to be in Ballarat at this time.
