Studio portrait of 781 Sergeant (Sgt) Magnus James McKay (left), Transport Section, Headquarters of the 17th Battalion, who was later awarded the Military Medal on 9 July 1917 and the Distinguished Conduct Medal on 10 January 1920; Probably 783A Sgt Rupert Leslie Seymour (right), Transport Section, Headquarters, 17th Battalion. Seymour enlisted firstly on 9 August 1914 with G Company of the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force and embarked aboard HMAT Berrima for six months service in New Guinea. He was discharged on 4 March 1915. He then re-enlisted in Sydney, NSW, on 15 March 1915 and embarked from Sydney with Sgt McKay aboard HMAT Themistocles on 12 May 1915. He was promoted to sergeant on 11 January 1917 and was wounded in action with Sgt McKay. He was killed in action serving with the 20th Battalion in France on 6 April 1918 aged 27 years.
