History / Summary

This medallion was produced by the Australian War Memorial in co-operation with the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, 18 August 1991. This medallion was the first produced by the Royal Australian Mint honouring the Vietnam War and as a result no more than two thousand were produced for sale. This maintained the medallion’s intrinsic as well as commemorative value. The obverse face of the medallion was sculpted by Wojciech Pietranik while the reverse was sculpted by Peter Latona and Michael Meszaros. The design of the medallion was based on a photograph held in the Memorial's collection taken at the ceremony held on 18 August 1969 to dedicate the Long Tan Cross and commemorate those killed during the battle of Long Tan.
