Studio portrait of three soldiers, who as friends all worked for the West Australian Railways at Narrogin, WA, prior to joining the army together. Identified, left to right: 1708 Private (Pte) James Thomas Baker; 1813 Pte Ralph Wilson Peacock, (standing); and 1832 Pte William Henry Stanbury. All three men enlisted on 16 January 1915. They were members of the 4th Reinforcements of the 11th Battalion, which embarked from Fremantle aboard HMAT Argyllshire on 19 April 1915. Lance Corporal Peacock was killed in action on 25 July 1916 at Pozieres, France aged 31. Ptes Baker and Stanbury returned to Australia after the war, became surveyors and remained friends until their deaths in 1961. Pte Stanbury was wounded at Gallipoli which resulted in the amputation of his left arm.
