Description
Aerial view of Courtenay Hill (left) at the commencement of Operation Overlord. Surrounded by jungle and the Courtenay rubber plantation, the cleared hill overlooks Night Defensive Position (NDP) Garth and Fire Support Base (FSB) Cherie (right) containing three circular gun pits beside Route 2. On 6 June 1971, the day after the start of Operation Overlord, 1 Australian Task Force (1ATF) established a forward or main headquarters in an outpost on top of the hill. It later housed the Headquarters and Command Post (CP) of 4RAR/NZ and was extensively fortified with over 100,000 sandbags, barbed wire and claymore mines.
