Commemorative medallion : HMS Powerful
Description
Bronze medallion showing on the obverse a ship and the words 'H.M.S. "POWERFUL"'. The reverse bears the words 'H.M.S. POWERFUL LENGTH 500 FEET 2500 HORSE POWER LAUNCHED BY HER GRACE THE DUCHESS OF DEVONSHIRE AT BARROW IN FURNESS 24TH JULY 1895 THIS MEDAL IS MADE OF BRONZE FROM H.M.S. POWERFUL'.
History / Summary
This medallion was struck to commemorate the launching of the 1st class cruiser HMS Powerful, of 14,200 tons. She was built by Vickers at the Barrow-in-Furness yards. Powerful served off South Africa during the Boer War and was later posted to the Australia Station at the beginning of the twentieth century.
