Folding knife : Gallipoli 1915
Folding knife with turned wooden handle and rusted steel drop point blade. The tapered handle has two grooves, one near the blade and another half way along the length of the handle, and finishes with a rounded ball-like end. A slight projection on the base of the handle shows where the wood was held on a lathe.
The handle has been cut down its length to allow the blade to fold into it. The symbol of an axe impressed in to the blade. Around the top of the handle is a metal ferrule held in place by a pin, which is threads through it and the tang of the blade, attaching the blade and allowing for its closing movement.
This knife was found by the Australian Historical Mission to Gallipoli in early 1919. The blade has rusted due to being left out on the battlefield for almost four years.
