Studio portrait of 3836 Acting Sergeant (later Sergeant) Charles Shillaber Evans, 18th Battalion of Ashfield, NSW. A bank clerk prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Runic (A54) on 20 January 1916. He was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 May 1917, aged 22. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France
