Studio portrait of 2384 Private (later Second Lieutenant) John William Murray Hartley, 25th Battalion (later 12th Machine Gun Corps) of Rockhampton, Qld. A bank clerk prior to enlisting, he embarked from Brisbane aboard HMAT Warilda (A69) on 5 October 1915. On 9 January 1917, he was wounded in action at Gueudecourt, France and died of his wounds that day in the 36th Casualty Clearing Station, France, aged 25. He is buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, France. His brother, 5697 Private George Williamson Hartley, 15th Battalion, was wounded during action at Messines, France and died on 23 June 1917.
