Studio portrait of 1787 Private James Alexander Montgomery 2nd Battalion, of Crookwell, NSW. A bank clerk prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Argyllshire (A8) on 10 April 1915. On 8 August 1915, aged19, he was wounded in action at Gallipoli, Turkey and died of his wounds, at sea, aboard HMHS Sicilia on 11 August 1915. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. On 11 December 1915, he was posthumously mentioned in despatches by General Sir Ian Hamilton for "services rendered in the Dardanelles Operations".
