Description
Studio portrait of 5184 Private (late Lance Corporal) Edward Kensett Smith, 3rd Battalion of Canadian Lead, via Mudgee, NSW. A bank clerk prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard SS Makarini on 1 April 1916. On 14 April 1918, during operations at Strazeele near Hazebrouck, France, aged 23, he was killed in action by sniper fire. He was buried near where he fell. Post war his grave was not located and he is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
